According toGoal, the agent, Vincenzo Morabito, also suggest that Mourinho and Rooney have a strained relationship.

RooneyremainedUnited captain when the Portuguese took over the reins from Louis van Gaal, but has lost his place in the team after a string of below-par performances.

The England captain alsofaces strongcompetition for places with the likes of Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, JesseLingered, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a central striker.

Despite this, England's all-time record scorer, withthree goals this season, is just a goal shy of Sir Bobby Charlton's United scoring record.

Rooney also became United's all time European top scorer with his goal against Feyenoord.

However,Morabito, a well knownintermediary between the Premier League and Serie Asays the 31-year-old could have been playing in Italy this season.

"I know for a fact that he was offered to Napoli as he can't go to other English clubs, which could lead him to Spain and Italy," Morabito said.

"He was, I repeat, offered to Napoli. While the idea is beautiful, when you look at his €10 million-a year salary, it isn't realistic.

"He certainly doesn't have a good relationship with Mourinho, and therefore his future is far from United, even on loan, to give them more room."

Rooney recently started in United's most recent fixture, a 2-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace, courtesy of a late goal by Ibrahimovic.

The Red's next fixture is a Premier League tie against West Brom Saturday evening.
