Alves urges PSG to step up

Veteran wing-back Dani Alves has challenged Paris Saint-Germain to rise to the occasion when they face Manchester United in the last-16 of the Champions League.

Alves, who was a three-time winner of the competition while with Barcelona, is a member of a PSG squad who are aiming to make history by going all the way in the competition, with the best the French club have managed to date a semi-final appearance in 1995.

We need to build on what we do well, because we have big ambitions in this competition.

And the Brazilian ace is well aware of what he and his colleagues will need to deliver in the first leg of their tie with United, at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

He told his club's official website: "I think we have to learn from the mistakes we've made in the competition in the past and not make the same mistakes again.

"We need to build on what we do well, because we have big ambitions in this competition. We need to raise our standard of play, our concentration, our impact in challenges.

"Obviously it won't be easy, they won't be doing us any favours. We are going to have to fight each other to qualify."

PSG are definitely without Brazilian ace Neymar (foot) for the game at Old Trafford, while Edinson Cavani misses out due to a hip problem and a recent concussion means that Thomas Meunier is forced to sit out.

The Parisians finished top of a group which also featured Liverpool, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade, while United ended second behind Juventus in Group H.

PSG can be backed at 5/2 to earn a draw on Tuesday, with a 1-1 final scoreline available at 11/2, while the French champions are 8/13 to reach the quarter-finals at the expense of United.
