The 32-year-old said that he felt minor cramp in his thigh, forcing him to be withdrawn half-way through the World Cup qualifier.

Robben, who was making his first international appearance of 2016, scored his 31st goal for Holland before being taken off, havingputDanny Blind's side 1-0 up in the first-half.

Speaking toDutch TV StationNOS after the game, as quoted in theDaily Mail, Robben said:"The word 'injury' is probably a little bit too heavy and I hope it is not bad.

"But of course it was not nice that I had to leave the field. I had to defend a counter-attack and attempted a sprint. I felt a brief cramp at the back of my thigh.

'When we arrived in the dressing room after the first half I had a discussion with the team doctor and we decided not to start the second half.

"I used my head and did not get caught up in the emotion. You want to keep playing, but it is wiser not to do this.

"Of course, you always feel responsibility, even towards my club Bayern Munich and there this was the best decision."

Luxembourg cancelled out Robben's opener on the stroke of half-time, only for out-of-favour Manchester United winger to score a second-half brace to tip the result in Holland's favour.

Robben added:"We just gave a goal away at the end of the first half and you cannot say that we played well.

"I do not want to be negative but it is the reality. We want to reach the World Cup, but we will have to play at a higher level."
