Arsenal Board Positive Arsene Wenger Will Turn Down Opportunity to Become England Manager

Arsene Wenger's future at Arsenal is thought to be of no major concern for the Arsenal hierarchy, according toThe Telegraph.

Theyremain positive that their long-time manager willrebuff any approaches from the FA in becoming England manager and will instead look toextendhis 20-year stay in north London.

The Frenchman has emerged as one of the surprising favourites to succeed the much-maligned Roy Hodgson, who resigned after suffering the ignominy of being knocked out by Iceland in Euro 2016 on Monday.

But it is understood the FA have wasted little time in drawing up candidates to replace Hodgson and Wenger is thought to be high on their list.

While reports suggest the three-time Premier League winner would be open to becoming England boss, timing is thought to be one issue. And with one year remaining on his current deal, the timing is seemingly not ideal.

The FA, though, would be willing to wait until next May for a manager committed to a club and would hire an interim manager during the meantime.

Current England U21 boss Gareth Southgate has been sounded out as a possible interim despite calls for some sections of the media for the former Middlesbrough man to get the job full time.

But it is understood the Arsenal hierarchy are averse to pre-contract deals and talk of dual-management by Wenger has been dismissed outright due to ahuge amount of effort needed for each job.

Wenger has, in recent months, been widely expected to commit to a new contract extension and the Gunners board are confident that will remain the case despite interest from the FA.

The Frenchman has reportedly turned the England job down on previous occasions stating an Englishman should be at the helm of the national team but the FA still remain keen.
