Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger Left Frustrated By 0-0 Premier League Draw With Middlesbrough

Arsene Wenger failed to hide his frustration after his Arsenal side were held to a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

The Frenchman, who was celebrating his 67th birthday, watched on from the sidelines as the Gunners toiled to a first stalemate in eight matches in all competitions.

Alexis Sanchez went closest for the hosts during the contest, while Mesut Ozil had the ball in the back of the net before being ruled offside, and Wenger told reporters after the game that there was one overriding emotion that he was feeling after his charges were held by Aitor Karanka's Teesiders.

He said: "I have a frustrated face, and I am frustrated. We had a lot of the ball but in the modern game that maybe isn't enough to win games.

"I felt we had 75% of the possession but we didn't have our usual in our combination, not enough sharpness in our movement.

"After the first 20 minutes Middlesbrough came back into the game and were dangerous on the break. In the end we didn't couldn't win it, but at least we were intelligent enough not to lose it."

Arsene Wenger on having a birthday drink: "When you win, you deserve it; when you don't, you need it."

Wenger lamented that his players were probably a little off the pace due to their exertions in Wednesday's 6-0 thrashing of FC Ludogorets in the Champions League, and stated his belief that his side were made to pay for not taking their chances early on in the game at the Emirates.

He continued: "(Playing) in the Champions League on Wednesday, we paid a little price. Usually when we play at home we manage to win, but we could have lost the game as well in the first half.

"That's the modern game - teams come and if you don't score early and aren't sharp enough, aren't creative enough, then you can have a draw or even lose the game."

Wenger was also quizzed over Santi Cazorla's absence from the team, and he added that Arsenal had missed the mercurial Spaniard's talents in the centre of the park.

He said: "Of course you always miss Cazorla at home. From deep midfield into the final third his passing is always quick, so yes we missed him."
