Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to make next season his last in the game.
Wenger signed a new two-year £16 million contract last week despite coming under huge pressure to quit after the club's failure to secure a Champions League place.
But the Sunday Mirror says knowing Stan Kroenke stuck his neck out to keep him, 67-year-old Wenger has promised to go quietly if he is unable to lead a concerted assault on the title.
He knows another season of title failure would reignite the protests and create a toxic atmosphere for the players and staff at the Emirates while creating divisions in the boardroom.
That's why he has given his word to Kroenke, who has himself come under fire from sections of the Arsenal support, to stand down at the end of next season if he fails to deliver.
