Arsenal Legend Robert Pires Eyes Sporting Director Role at the Emirates Stadium

Robert Pires, who was astar of France's World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000 wins, as well as a key member of the Arsenal 'Invincibles' team, has revealed he would love to return to North London in a sporting director role.

Pires is close to former boss Arsene Wenger, with theMetroreporting that the former winger has designs on working alongside his former mentor again.

Despite fellow Arsenal legends Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry reportedly becoming frustrated with Wenger's unwillingness to accommodate hisformer players, Pires remains optimistic of securing a role at the Emirates.

"Yes, [returning to Arsenal] is my objective. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I need to talk about it with the owners and Arsene Wenger.

"I'd love this [sporting director] job, I love to talk with the players. If I am given this job one day, I can stay in contact with football, especially with Arsenal. I have a good [relationship] with [Arsene Wenger], that's important.

"I can work with players, I can give advice to the young players, so we can find a good relationship between me and the players."

Either side of his spell at Arsenal - undoubtedly the most successful period of his career - Pires spent time at Metz, Marseille, Villarreal, Aston Villa and FC Goa.

But it would appear that the Gunners hold the biggest place in his heart, as he appears to have shunneda more gentle route back into football with one of his lower-profile former sides, to set his sights on a return to Arsenal.

The Frenchman netted 84 goals from 189 matches during his time in North London, a hugely impressive and prolific record for a left winger, as he won two league titles and reached the final of the 2006 Champions League, during his six year spell under Wenger's tutelage.
