Long-term Arsenal absentee Carl Jenkinson has finally returned to action with the club's U23 side as boss Arsene Wenger hails the player's patience and resilience during a tough period.

The 24-year-old had been sent out on loan to fellow Londoners West Ham United, where he was enjoying a successful spell of game time and good performances, however an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee in Januarymeant a nine month lay-off for the defender.

However, it appears the England international has recovered following a lengthy period on the sidelines, returning to training with the Gunners in September, and was given his first chance at some game time with the club's U23 side on Friday night against Southampton, where he played just over hour before being taken off.

According tothe Mirror, Wenger has hailed the youngster for his 'fantastic mentality', and expects him to be challenging for a starting spot in the squad in the coming months.

"It has been very tough for him because he had the knee and after, the shoulders," said Wenger."You think it's endless at that age, you need to be patient.

Just over an hour of action on his return - but now it's time for Chiori Johnson

"He has been patient, resilient and he has a fantastic mentality ” he has worked very hard to come back. He had the support of everybody here at the club and I think he has done extremely well."

Despite making over 50 first team appearances for the Gunners so far in his career, Jenkinson will have his work cut out should he wish to become a regular starter for Wenger's men at right back, with the likes of Hector Bellerin providing stiff competition in that area.
