Arsenal Outcast Claims Relationship With Wenger Has Been Utterly Broken Since 2014

Published on: 28 December 2016

Mathieu Debuchy has claimed that his working relationship with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been irretrievable ever since he blocked the full-back's move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils were reportedly interested in prising the France international away from the Emirates in the summer of 2014, but Wenger refused to entertain any offers from the Gunners' fierce Premier League rivals - comments that clearly angered Debuchy, who was extremely interested in moving to Old Trafford.

The right back has now told L'Equipe (via ESPN) that he and Wenger no longer talk to one another, apart from saying "Good morning", as he cited the Frenchman's insistence on keeping Debuchy at Arsenal as the key reason behind a complete breakdown in communication between the pair.

He said: "I wasn't playing a lot, it was United, there's nothing else to say. For me, it was almost unexpected, but the coach said no. It's something I did not appreciate. He wasn't using me, so I didn't see his interest in doing that.

"We acknowledge each other, we say hello, nothing more."

Debuchy has started just two league matches this term, with the form of Hector Bellerin and a hamstring strain restricting him to very few minutes on the pitch.

The 31-year-old's fall from grace is in stark contrast to the expectancy placed on his shoulders upon joining Arsenal from Newcastle United in July 2014, with a six-month loan spell at Bordeuax in the second half of last season going some way to showing just how out of favour Debuchy now is in north London.

Despite clearly angling for a move in search of first-team football, and with significant interest in his services over the summer, Debuchy also claimed that the club would not allow him to leave, but now has his sights set on reclaiming the first choice right back berth from Bellerin.

He added: "I had opportunities at the end of the transfer window. Unfortunately, the club didn't want to let me go.

"I had a good preseason, I gave my all, but from the first game, I wasn't in the squad. It was a real blow. I said to myself that things weren't starting well.

"My situation doesn't meet what I had been hoping for, but that's football. There have been things, injuries and the coach's choices that have meant that I haven't played. Even if I don't understand, I'm not surprised, I know how it works."

"I have had some very difficult moments. Now, I try to channel that, to take it out in my work. I don't show anything, I dig in. I have always worked like that."
