Arsenal Prepare Improved £35m Bid for Lyon Striker Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal are readying a new £35m bid for Lyon's star forward Alexandre Lacazette, according to The Telegraph.

Arsene Wenger has switched his attention to the France international after failing in his pursuit of Leicester City's Jamie Vardy.

The Gunners have already had an initial €35m (£29.3m) bid rejected for Lacazette and have been publicly told he is not for sale.

However, the Premier League runners-up will test Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas' resolve with a fresh £35m offer.

Wenger is determined to add a new striker to his squad following Danny Welbeck's injury and Olivier Giroud's likely absence for the start of the Premier League with the 29-year-old yet to return to pre-season after reaching the Euro 2016 final with France.

As things stand, Theo Walcott is set to lead the line in Arsenal's opening fixture against Liverpool, while Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell could be called upon should Wenger not be able to sign another centre-forward.

Akpom and Campbell both made an impression after scoring in Arsenal's 2-1 win against the MLS All-Stars in San Jose on Thursday.

But Wenger is adamant on bringing in a more experienced centre-forward and does not want to miss out on Lacazette, who has scored 48 goals over the past two seasons in Ligue 1, after Vardy's rejection.

Wenger has tried to reassure fans that the club knows what it is doing but has admitted of his fear about the current transfer market.

"I personally believe that no matter what you do, it's never enough, the 66-year-old was quoted saying on Telegraph Sport.

"With the cheques that everybody signs, it's quite scary. But I believe we know what we have to do."
