Arsene Wenger Calls Andrea Belotti Rumour 'Fake News' & Explains Reason for Not Chasing New Strikers

Published on: 12 January 2017

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has strongly denied any imminent Gunners approach or deal for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, despite the recent rumours, while also choosing to explain his reasoning behind not chasing any new forwards this month.

The summer was full of Arsenal transfer reports about Alvaro Morata, Alexandre Lacazette and Jamie Vardy - the latter chose to stay put rather than accept a contract at the Emirates - while Torino's sporting director claimed on Sunday that a huge bid for Belotti had come in.

"We received and refused a €65m offer from Arsenal for Andrea Belotti, but it does not reflect the value of the player," Gianluca Petrachi told Sky Italia.

But addressing questions about Belotti at his press conference ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash with Swansea, Wenger contested Petrachi's story.

Wenger on Arsenal's supposed bid for Torino striker Belotti: "That's what you call today fake news."

The Frenchman denied the existence of any bid from Arsenal - which club sources had also apparently told Sky Sports in England at the time - and amounted it to "fake news".

What's more, Arsenal will not at allbe chasing 23-year-old Belotti, who is enjoying the most prolific goalscoring season of his career to date, or anyone else for that matter, because the manageris more than happy with the options he has with his attacking unit already.

Wenger, it seems, would even willingly turn to Yaya Sanogo, currently on loan at Charlton in League One after previous goal-less spells with Ajax and Crystal Palace, before dipping into the market again.

"We have Welbeck coming back (to fitness), Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, we have plenty of strikers. Lucas Perez is doing very well now. We have Akpom, Sanogo, a high number of strikers," the Arsenal boss explained.
