Arsene Wenger Urges Arsenal Star Not to Make Wage Increase Primary Concern Over Extending Stay

Arsene Wenger has urged Alexis Sanchez not to make money his number one priority as talks continue over extending the striker's stay at Arsenal.

Sanchez currently has 18 months left on his current contract at the Emirates, but rumours have suggested that the Chile international is holding out for a deal worth over £200,000-a-week - a substantial increase on the £130,000-a-week contract he earns at this moment in time.

Reports in Tuesday's media also appeared to suggest that Sanchez, as well as club team mate Mesut Ozil, were even holding out for a staggering £290,000-a-week deal to match the salary currently picked up by Manchester United midfielder and the world's most expensive signing Paul Pogba.

However, speaking to the press ahead of the clash, with his quotes published by the Daily Mail, Wenger said that he believed that players of Sanchez's ilk could earn vast fortunes wherever they played - and that his star forward should consider other factors aside from increasing his wage packet.

The Frenchman said: "The luxury of the modern game means it should not only be about the money, because the players, wherever they play, make good money at this level.

"I believe, personally ” maybe I am a bit naive ” that it's more about getting to meet the player's needs. The way the club has values, the way the club has ambition, the way the club respects the players. For me, that is more important nowadays and an important ingredient for every player to consider. The money is good everywhere."

Sanchez has been deployed as the main man leading Arsenal's attack throughout the season, and has repaid the faith shown in him by Wenger by plundering 13 goals in 19 appearances - form that included a Premier League hat-trick in the 5-1 thumping of West Ham United on Saturday.

The 27-year-old has flown out to Switzerland with the rest of Arsenal's first-team squad for Tuesday's Champions League encounter against FC Basel, despite the North London outfit already qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

Arsenal have already tied Hector Bellerin to a new long-term deal at the club, and remain hopeful that Ozil and Sanchez will follow suit.
