Asamoah Gyan wants India to adopt a system that allows non-residents to play for the national team

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has urged India football authorities to adopt a system that will absorb non-resident Indians (NRI) to play for the national team to help promote and improve the standard of play.

The striker recently completed a move to NorthEast United on a free transfer after partying ways with Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor.

Having already made headways in the new league with his first goal against the Indian national team in a friendly match, he is expected to help the sport in the country improve whiles attracting more stars to the League.

Speaking in an interview with sentinelassam.com, Gyan has stressed that “Giving opportunities to the NRI players in the national team can also help India to improve their standard further. A few countries like France has adopted this system and got good result”.

He further noted that even though football is not the number one sport in India, talented players should be given the needed boost to help them develop.

“I think football is not the number one sport in India. It should be. I have seen some players here who are talented and want to play football, but they need help to do better”, the former Sunderland marksman said.
