Atalanta Captain Admits Inter Move Could Happen After Sudden Collapse of 2013 Transfer

Atalanta captainPapu Gomez has claimed that he was very close to a move to Inter in 2013, but the deal suddenly collapsed.

The 29-year-old has featured heavily in a team which has put in some very impressive results this season, but speaking to Corriere Dello Sport (viaFootball Italia), the Argentine has claimed to have been very close to a switch to Inter four years ago.

A move to Inter? It was all done.[Andrea] Stramaccioni wanted me, there was agreement on everything but it got sent away and then¦ poof.Could I join Diego Simeone at Inter? You never know what could happen in life. Cholo coached me at San Lorenzo and Catania, and I still have four or five years at a high level¦

Atalanta, who are fifth in Serie A, have performed above and beyond what was expected of them this term, but Gomez insists that his side have to believe that they belong where they are.

In the past, if Atalanta got 0 points against Napoli, Fiorentina and Inter it would be considered almost normal, but now we have to play almost on par with the big teams. At the moment we can beat almost any team in Serie A, and we want to battle with Milan, Inter and Lazio to get into Europe.

This Sunday will be a head-to-head clash, but it's not a decisive match because there's a long way to go.

A win could potentially see Atalanta leapfrog Lazio for fourth place. However, losing to Inter would result in them dropping down to sixth, and possibly even seventh.
