Reports emerged this week claiming United manager Jose Mourinho was keen on acquiring the 21-year-old as the Portuguese coach looks to build his squad at Old Trafford.

However, the Spain international - who rose to prominence last season when he scored a solo wonder goal against Bayern Munich - has firmly pledged his future to Atletico as long as coach Diego Simeone remains at the club.

"As long as Simeone stays here, I'll be here."

"When a coach shows you such trust and gives you so much confidence, it's key," Saul said.

"When you play one or two games where you are not at your best but he still plays you, in the end you die for him because you feel you owe it to him.

"The calmness that he transmits to me makes me be who I am today on the pitch. It took me a long time to gain his confidence but now that I have it, I'm going to continue to work for him, giving my all."

Saul's rise saw him rewarded with a new Atletico contract but he insists he is still working hard to cement his place in the starting line-up.

"I'm working towards that," he said. "I have the values and the philosophy of this club. We have to take it one game at a time, but I have no limits. I'm always going to give the best I have and I will see how far I can go."
