Atsu and Amartey among 24 players to miss English league football action on account of AFCON 2017

The 2017 African Cup of Nations kicks-off in a weeks time in Gabon and most European leagues are bracing for at most five weeks without their best African players.

On that list of European league is England where the two top tiers - The English Championship and The English Premier League - where a staggering 24 players will be out of action.

The competition starts on January 14 and ends on February 5, meaning some of these players including Ghana's Daniel Amartey and Christian Atsu could be away for as many as five weeks.

The EPL clubs which rely heavily on African players will be the worst affected, including Leicester City with four players potentially going to Gabon and Stoke City which will miss three players, while each of West Ham United, Watford, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Bournemouth will miss two players.

The competition is yet to start but most of the teams are currently in pre-AFCON camps predominantly UAE and Gabon.
