Augustine Eguavoen steps down as Nigeria coach after World Cup elimination

Augustine Eguavoen steps down as Nigeria's coach after failing to qualify the West African country for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to Brila FM.

Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday, hence the Black Stars sealed qualification on the away goals rule.

Thomas Partey gave Ghana the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute before Watford defender William Trost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot 12 minutes later after Ademola Lookman was judged to have been fouled in the box.

"Austin Eguavoen has stepped down as Super Eagles Head Coach and will return to his role as Technical Director of all national teams.

"Reliable sources reveal Eguavoen has sent an official letter to the NFF stating his decision.

"Brila Media gathered that, in the aftermath of the failed World Cup bid, the NFF will announce the sack of Eguavoen, however, the embattled Coach is yet to sign the proposed two-year contract for the Super Eagles job which he was handed two days before the first leg of the World Cup play-off against Ghana," according to Brila FM.

Ghana’s qualification denied Nigeria a fourth successive outing at the World Cup finals.
