Australia, Thailand set up dream clash

Published on: 06 July 2018

Australia, represented by their Under-20 squad, defeated Cambodia 12-0 while defending champions Thailand beat Malaysia 8-0 at the Bumi Sriwijaya Stadium.

Both have three wins but following Friday's results, Australia are top with 28 goals with Thailand adrift by one.  They meet on Sunday to decide the group winners.

It was a fabulous Mary Boio Fowler show in the Australia-Cambodia tie as the lanky forward scored five goals – all in the first half as the young Matildas took an 8-0 lead into the break.

Had Fowler not been replaced during the break by Princess Megan Isei, she would have surely added to her tally of eight goals so far in the competition.

The young Australian side came out with all guns blazing as Fowler’s double in the 10th and 12th minutes set the pace for the remainder of the match.

Fowler went on to score three more goals in the 18th, 25th and 31st minutes.

The remainder of the Young Matildas goals were scored off a hat-trick by Melindaj Barbieri (44th, 57th, 87th), Bethany Kate Gordon (14th), Holly Christina McNamara (29th), Isei (69th) and Alexandra Carla Chidiac (92nd).

Thailand faced little difficulty against Malaysia as they scored an 8-0 win.

The Thais, who will be playing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France next year, made several positional changes as head coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian opted for variety in their attacking options.

Midfielder and captain Sunisa Srangthaisong played deeper down the left while Orathai Srimanaee had a more free playing role.

Even then, Malaysia could not cope with the strength and presence of Suchawadee Nildhamrong at the centre of the park as she used her physical strength to full effect.

Sudarat Chuchuen (4th, 71st), Orathai Srimanee (32nd, 47th) and Pitsamai Sornsai (75th, 90th) all grabbed two goals each while Kanjana Sung-Ngoen (15th) and Suchawadee Nildhamrong (36th) had one each.
