AWCON 2018: Abukari Damba worried about Black Queens qualification ahead of Cameroon clash

Published on: 22 November 2018

Former Ghana international Abukari Damba says the Black Queens will face a difficult task in overcoming Cameroon in the final Group A game of the ongoing Africa Women's Cup of Nations.

Ghana face an early elimination from the competition after they suffered a 2-1 loss to Mali in the second round of matches on Tuesday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Queens will need to beat already-qualified Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday to stand any chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

Speaking to Accra based radio station Happy FM, the former Black Stars goalkeeper believes it will be very difficult to beat Cameroon, however, he urged the Queens to limit their errors in order to overcome the Group A leaders.

“If not for the two goalkeeping errors we made, we could have gone ahead to win this game, but errors are part of the game. Now let us see how we can put our act together, put the defeat behind us and see how we can forge ahead," Damba said.

“So far as the Cameroonians are concerned, they are very physical, very athletic and technical on the ball as well. They have all the attributes a good team must have in football. So they are very good."

"They are better than the Malians. So against them, we need to make sure we have a fantastic defensive set up to try and hold our lines and commit fewer errors especially goalkeeping errors."

"If we do that, we might stand a chance of getting something out of the match but my brother, it will be very very difficult,” he added.

Ghana are third with three points after edging Algeria 1-0 in the first group game but lost to Mali.

The Queens must avoid defeat against Cameroon on Friday and hope Mali lose to Algeria in the final round of matches.

Abukari played for Real Tamale United and also in Perak FA in Malaysia. He was also capped for the Black Stars.

He was selected as a reserve goalkeeper for the 1992 African Cup of Nations finals. After he retired from playing, Damba became a football coach.

He was the Ghana national team's goalkeeping coach before being asked to step down following corruption accusations in July 2007. Damba was also the goalkeeping coach for Accra Hearts of Oak.
