Baba Rahman faces lengthy injury spell; requires surgery

Chelsea defender Baba Rahman faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring himself at the African Nations Cup.

Rahman, who is currently on loan at Schalke, was forced off in the first half of Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Uganda after sustaining a serious-looking knee crock.

A statement from the Ghana Football Association confirmed the 22-year-old will “undergo further tests and possible surgery”.

Tests in Gabon’s capital Libreville on Wednesday confirmed that Baba had suffered “a rupture of the meniscus with fluid collection in the left knee.”

Rahman signed for Chelsea in a £21.7million deal from Augsburg in August 2015.

The full-back made 23 appearances for the Blues last term but joined Schalke on a season-long loan in the summer.

Rahman’s Stamford Bridge contract expires in August 2020.
