Barcelona to Focus on Securing Future of Midfield Maestro Andres Iniesta After Tying Down 'MSN'

Published on: 21 December 2016

Barcelona remain intent on finishing tying all three of the 'MSN' trident down to new contracts, but will soon also turn their attention to negotiating new deals for several other key players in the squad, including club captain Andres Iniesta.

An agreement was struck with Neymar in the summer, while Luis Suarez recently followed suit. Now it is all about convincing a reluctant Lionel Messi to sign an extension instead of allowing his current contract to run down before deciding his future.

According to Sport, Barça are also looking to continue talks with Croatian maestro Ivan Rakitic and German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Rakitic is currently contracted to the Catalans until 2018 and is thought to have been discussing a new deal for several months. Ter Stegen has 12 months longer left to 2019, but fresh terms and an extension is deemed important by Camp Nou officials.

Iniesta will follow soon after. The World Cup winner's contract expires sooner than Ter Stegen's, but his loyalty to the club makes securing his future a less urgent matter. That being said, the club is still keen to for him to extend and remain a one-club man.

Now 32 years of age, Iniesta has often played second fiddle to the likes of Messi and former midfield colleague Xavi in the past rather than be lauded as an individual in his own right.

He's played over 600 first-team games since being handed a debut by Louis van Gaal during the 2002/03 campaign and has been at the heart of the team through eight La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey successes, four Champions League triumphs and countless other trophies.
