Bayern Munich Fitness Coach Claims Arjen Robben's Injuries Are Down to His Style of Play

Published on: 23 September 2016

Giovanni Mauri, Bayern Munich's fitness coach, believes that the frequency of Arjen Robben's injuries is being caused by the Dutchman's pacy and explosive style of play.

Robben returned to the Bayern Munich side on Wednesday for a comfortable 3-0 win over Hertha Berlin, scoring a goal in the process.

Mauri told German publicationTZthat"Arjen Robben's characteristics make him a vulnerable player.

"His typical sprints and explosiveness are crucial to him. These characteristics always pose a certain injury risk, though.

"But you can significantly limit the risk with the right training regime. That is our goal right now."

Robben, 32, made only 22 appearances for Bayern Munich last season, but Munich still won the Bundesliga without him and are determined to engineer their training regimes more towards the player's liking.

"Arjen has left this difficult spell with injuries behind him. He will 100 per cent certain become the same player he was before his injuries again.

"It is now up to him, to us and to the right training regime to ensure he remains injury free."

Bayern Munich XI vs. Hamburg: Neuer; Lahm, Martínez, Hummels, Alaba; Kimmich, Sanches, Thiago; Müller, Lewandowski, Coman.

Bayern Munich are involved in a clash of the titans on Wednesday night in the Champions League, coming up against Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid. Both sides won their opening fixtures in Group D, but Munich lead the group with a goal difference of +5.

Though Robben may not be back at the right level yet for such a critical match in determining the final group positions, his experience and Champions League know-how might well be the difference between first and second.
