Bayern Munich Manager Carlo Ancelotti Plays Down Arjen Robben Injury

Published on: 01 October 2016

According toFourFourTwo, Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti has played down the severity of the injury that brought Dutch winger Arjen Robben's first start of the season to an early end.

The 32-year-old featured in the Bavarians' starting line-up for the first time in 2016/17, as Ancelotti's side were held to a 1-1 home draw with Cologne on Saturday, but was replaced by Thomas Muller at half time.

Despite fears that Robben had suffered a recurrance of the groin problem that had sidelined him for the early part of the season, Ancelotti told the club's website that there was no cause for concern.

"He was in pain and could not go on, but it's nothing serious," the former Milan, Juventus, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager said. The club disclosed the official nature of the injury as 'slightly bruised ribs'.

With Robben's fitness clearly no great cause for concern, the Italian turned his focus to his disappointment at the draw, which saw Bayern lose their one hundred percent Bundesliga record, leaving Manchester City as the only team in Europe's major leagues with a flawless start to the season.

The Citizens have made a blistering start to the season under former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, but his old charges show no real sign of faltering under Ancelotti, who seemed confident that his side would get back on track quickly.

"We are allowed to be disappointed but we need not worry," said the Italian.

"We could have won the game, but Cologne had chances to take all three points at [Bayern's] home as well. We started well and had control, but Cologne improved in the second half."

Bayern had 27 shots during the game, but only managed to put three on targetto Cologne's two.

However, the German Champions may count themselves unfortunate to draw the match, as they also struck the woodwork twice through Spaniards Javi Martinez and Juan Bernat.
