Hoeness, who was appointed as Bayern's president on Friday, blasted United earlier this month for their treatment ofSchweinsteiger.

ESPNquote him as saying on November 4th:"To not allow a man like Schweinsteiger to train with the rest of the team, to leave him off the team photo and to treat him like a leper and push him aside like that does not speak well of a club, although it says a lot about the situation at this club.

"Schweinsteiger is an amazing human being and was an amazing player for Bayern Munich. It's a real shame that United are doing this to him."

And his choice words for Man Utd continued on Monday as he said that the Old Trafford club 'must be punished' for their treatment of the German midfielder.

"If I were him, I would make the people in Manchester pay until his last day,"

Schweinsteiger has been linked with a move to the MLS after falling down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, but Hoeness believes retirement is more likely over another 'major challenge'.

"From what I have heard, Basti's on his way out of football," he continued. "I know him well and I doubt he's still got the fire left in him for one final major challenge.

"After such a brilliant career, a player like him shouldn't see out his career in a place like America. For me, America simply isn't an alternative for a player of his calibre.

"As far as I know, he's committed to a massive farewell game at FC Bayern. I would do that but then I would retire."

Hoeness concluded his talk about the United midfielder by saying that he should take time to settle down with his wife, Serbian tennis star Ana Ivanovic, after the pair married earlier this year.

"He's lucky to have such a beautiful wife and should set different priorities in life," he added. "I wish he would concentrate more on starting a family."
