Bayern Munich Shot Stopper Manuel Neuer Crowned IFFHS' 2016 Goalkeeper of the Year

Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer has been crowned the International Federation of Football History and Statistics' (IFFHS) Goalkeeper of the Year for 2016.


The German shot stopper won the award - an announcement made on the IFFHS's official site - ahead of Juventus and Italy custodian Gianluigi Buffon, whom he now joins on four victories, and so sits just one win behind five-time record holder Ikas Casillas.


The triumph caps another sterling 12 months for Neuer, who picked up another Bundesliga title, plus the DfB Pokal Cup and German Super Cup with Bayern in 2015/16.

The award, which is based on online votes and has been handed out to the most deserving keeper since 1987, is handed to the star with the highest number of points accrued from the number of votes cast. IFFHS editorial staff, plus a number of footballing experts from across the globe, cast the votes as to who should be be crowned champion.


Neuer, with a whopping 156 points, crushed the competition with Buffon managing just 91 as he finished in the runner-up position.


Portuguese star and Euro 2016 winner Rui Patricio finished third with 50. Manchester City's Claudio Bravo, meanwhile, was the highest-ranked British based keeper in fourth place.

Neuer, 30, has now won the prestigious award four times in a row, overtaking compatriot Olivier Kahn and ex-Inter Milan and Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga in the process.


Neuer has featured almost 280 times for Bayern throughout his playing career, and has won 12 titles with his club side as well as the 2014 World Cup with Germany in Brazil.


He has made 24 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's side so far this term, keeping 12 clean sheets as the German giants reclaimed first place in the Bundesliga ahead of the enforced winter break on the continent last Saturday.
