Bayern Munich's Lewandowski Had the Perfect Response to His Position in 2016 Ballon d'Or Rankings

Published on: 12 December 2016

As one of the most feared strikers in world football, Robert Lewandowski's name on the 30-man shortlist for the 2016 Ballon d'Or award was never called into question.

The Bayern Munich star helped theside to a league and cup double last term, fired Poland to the Euro 2016 Championship in France this summer and has already plundered 19 goals for his club in just 22 matches so far this term.

When news broke that the 28-year-old had, therefore, only finished in 16th place in the prestigious awards' final rankings, it's safe to say that Lewandowski probably wouldn't be best pleased:

Thankfully, he took it all in his stride and chose to laugh off his lowly place:

Unfortunately for the ex-Borussia Dortmund forward, though, football fans weren't so forgiving and took to Twitter to mock him for finishing behind the likes of Jamie Vardy:

@lewy_official @francefootball u are worse than vardy

@lewy_official you've just been ranked worse than vardy and mahrez this isn't a laughing matter

@lewy_official @francefootball Agreed. Costa should be well ahead of you.

Others were more sympathetic to his plight, however:

@lewy_official @francefootball you sound frustrated mate  work harder to get it, don't look pathetic here on social media

Football supporters have never been a group to pass up an opportunity such as this, have they?

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo pipped Barcelona rival Lionel Messi and city rivals Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to scoop the gong as he won the prize for the fourth time in his career.
