Belgium Boss Roberto Martinez Plays Down Vincent Kompany Injury Fears After Defender Misses Friendly

Published on: 09 November 2016

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez insists that Vincent Kompany has not picked up an injury, despite the defender pulling out of his country's friendly with Holland on Wednesday.

The Manchester City captain has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons and having only just returned to full fitness, appeared setto play in the match with the Netherlands after being named in the original starting XI.

Vincent Kompany has been injured in tonight's warmup.

Just retire now mate, seriously.

However, the defender seemed to pick up an injuryproblem in the warm up before the match and subsequently pulled out at the last minute, which immediately sent City and their fans into panic.

Despite this, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has played down any suggestion that the centre back is injured, but did admit he was uncertain if hiscaptain would be fit for their World Cup Qualifier against Estonia next Sunday.

After his team's 1-1 draw with Holland,Martinez toldSky Sports:"There is no injury to Vincent Kompany.

"We did not want to take any risks with him and Kompany did not feel well after the warm-up.

"I want every player to be 100 per cent. I would be surprised if he can play Sunday, but it is still too early to say.

"We will have to assess the situation, especially with his club. If he is not ready, I will take another defender."

Kompany has only made a handful ofappearances for City this season due to a variety of injuries keeping him on the sidelines.

With Pep Guardiola struggling to find a consistent back four at Eastlands, he will hope that Martinez's assessment is correct and that they will have Kompany available for City's next match following the international break against Crystal Palace.
