Ben Gibson Issues Riverside Stadium Rallying Cry as Middlesbrough Plot End to 7-Match Winless Run

Published on: 25 October 2016

Ben Gibson has urged Middlesbrough fans to make the Riverside stadium as intimidating as possible as the club goes in search of ending their seven-match winless run in the Premier League.

In quotes published by the Gazette Live, Gibson called upon the Riverside faithful to make as much noise as possible with the hope of striking fear into the hearts of opposition players during home matches on Teeside.

The centre-half knows all about being a Boro fan after he stood on the terraces himself as a young fan, and he now wants all Middlesbrough supporters to make a cacophony of noise - akin to that seen in the 1-1 draw against Brighton that secured promotion to the English top flight in May - when the club return home to face Bournemouth on Saturday.

He said: We have to make the Riverside a really hostile place for teams to come, so I encourage the fans to get out and get behind us.

We want the colour. We want the noise. Be raucous and make it like it was for that Brighton promotion game because that really does help.

When the Boro crowd are roaring and singing it is incredible really and it does give us an extra edge and I think it does get to the opposition a bit too.

Can't help but cry laughing at @bengibson1993 and the rest of the team on @Boro's Snapchat 😂😂

To some of those visiting players who haven't been at the Riverside because we haven't been in the Premier League in the last few years, it really hits them how intimidating it actually can be here.

I know that. I have friends who have come up here and played and then they've said to me afterwards how hostile they felt it is.

The fans have been brilliant but we have to keep at it and make sure it is like that at full volume all game every week.

After losing just five home matches during two seasons in the Championship, Middlesbrough are yet to taste victory on home soil after returning to the Premier League, and have garnered just one point from their opening four home games.

Gibson, 23, knows that such a run of form is not good enough and added that manager Aitor Karanka and his players were doing all they could to arrest the alarming run of results.

He said: For us to stay up this season we have to have a good home record, and it hasn't been good enough so far, said the centre-back frankly.

I don't think we've got as many points from our start as we actually deserved and I think some of the criticism hasn't been fair.

People can get carried away, but we've been in the Championship for seven years and we know how hard and horrible it is. We're out of there now and we need to stick together.

This season is all about fight and all about staying up and there'll be good runs and bad runs. It's about how we respond and react.
