Ghana U-20 coach Jimmy Cobblah says he will be relying heavily on local players for the upcoming WAFU U-20 championship which starts on Thursday.

The team have been in camp for the last two weeks preparing rigorously for the tourney ahead of the Africa Youth Championship to be staged in Niger next year.

Speaking to the press, the ex-Inter Allies trainer revealed the preparatory competition is reserved for his local players to prove their worth ahead of the AFCON U-20 championship.

“We believe the WAFU isn’t about the cup but its preparation," he said.

"We have spent some time with the team during the qualifiers where we invited some European players. And now they are gone.”

He continued, “So we have decided to look at the local players around and understudy them from now to the tournament. And we will know those who can make the team after the WAFU for AFCON.”

“We have been in camp for two weeks but we hoping to display good performance to boost the players' morale going into the Africa Cup of Nations.”

The WAFU U-20 Championship is an association football tournament that is contested between West African nations.
