BORUSSIA D - to target Premier League Youngsters

Published on: 19 October 2018

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc admits they are keeping an eye on young players from top Premier League clubs after the success of Jadon Sancho. The 18-year-old joined Dortmund from Manchester City last summer and has been in fine form this season, notching eight assists and one goal in 10 appearances so far. That form led to Gareth Southgate naming the teenager in his squad for the Nations League during the recent international break, with Sancho making his senior England debut in the 0-0 draw with Croatia last Friday.

Now Zorc says scouting talented youngsters who are not getting a great deal of game time with their Premier League clubs will be part of their transfer strategy in the future.

"Until now it has nearly been out of the question for us to be able to transfer players from England to Germany," he said. "I think there is a big opportunity out there to source highly talented young players - in particular at the absolute top clubs. Due to the financial power of the English clubs, they often buy a top class player into their squad. Therefore young players cannot break through, which is different to how things are done in Germany. Of course we will keep our eyes open in the future, too."
