Borussia Dortmund Chief Executive Says 'Revenue Driven' RB Leipzig Are Nothing Like Leicester City

Borussia Dortmund chief executiveHans-Joachim Watzke has dismissed comparisons between the Bundesliga's current leaders RB Leipzig and Premier League champions Leicester City, citing a lack of tradition and commercial priority at the German club.

Claudio Ranieri's Foxes defied all odds to claim an unprecedented Premier League title, having narrowly avoided relegation the season before.

RB Leipzig are currently unbeaten in the league but Watzke has rubbished comparisons between the two teams, claiming Leipzig's success isno surprise given their considerable investment.

"There is no tradition like Leicester City," Watzke toldBBC World Service's World Football.

Leipzig's approach has come under criticism due to many of Germany's clubs being run in some capacity by fans, while some have also claimed the club is being used purely as a marketing ploy by Red Bull in order to boost the company's revenues.

Leipzig have become one of the most unpopular teams in Germany thanks to their rapid ascension, with Dortmund fans in particular taking issue with club's rise to fame.

Some supporters of Thomas Tuchel's side refused to make the trip to support their side when the two teams squared off in September, instead listening to the match on radios.

"It's a club built to push up the revenues for Red Bull and for nothing else," he added.

"Ok, it's good for the league because the race to be champions is more close. In German football, the clubs belong to the fans and our pricing level is very cheap. A lot of fans from England come to Borussia Dortmund to watch a live game for 11 euros."

Leipzig take on Ingolstadt on Saturday, with the club currently three points ahead of title favourites Bayern Munich.
