CAF Confederations Cup: Kotoko faced tough test in narrow win over Sharks - Coach Akunnor

Published on: 23 December 2018

Asante Kotoko head coach Charles Kwablan Akunnor says his side had survived a tough test as they recorded a 2-1 victory over Kariobangi Sharks in the Caf Confederation Cup on Saturday.

Following the goalless draw that played out between the two sides in Kenya last weekend, it was Kotoko who gained the early advantage with Fatawu Safui scoring the opener on 17 minutes.

The lead lasted until the 30th minute as Kariobangi levelled through Katila Omoto strike.

But eight minutes later, Kotoko were back in front thanks to captain Amos Frimpong. The defender converted a penalty after Yacouba Songne was fouled in the box.

Speaking after the game, the former Hearts of Oak and AshantiGold SC gaffer believes his outfit did well to edge out a tight contest at the Baba Yara Stadium.

"The intensity was very high. These guys tested us and I must congratulate our back four," he said

"We didn’t do as we wanted to do because of the attack from the opponent but we were able to manage and contain their pressure.

Coach C.K Akunor claims to progress to the next stage of the competition is the most important thing despite the hard-fought win.

"The second half, we tried; if possible to get a goal but it wasn’t. We’ve qualified; that’s most important."

Asante Kotoko will know their opponents for the play-off round on December 28.
