CAF U-23 AFCON: Ghana likely to miss services of Joseph Paintsil as Genk refuses to release player

Report available to footballghana.com indicates that KRC Genk is being reluctant to release Joseph Paintsil to join the Black Meteors for the upcoming CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana has qualified for this year’s continental competition and is hoping to enjoy success throughout the stages in order to secure qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Ahead of the tournament which will start next month in Egypt, Coach for Ghana’s Black Meteors, Ibrahim Tanko has extended an invitation to Joseph Paintsil.

He was instrumental in the qualifiers to the tournament and is expected to play a key role for the gaffer’s side when they move to Cairo next week.

Meanwhile, information gathered indicates that Genk is not ready to allow the attacker who has recently recovered from injury to join his Black Meteors teammates.

Though it is uncertain whether they will change their mind, they might be compelled to do so eventually based on the FIFA rules on the release of players to association teams.

Speaking in an interview with GHANAsoccernet.com Paintsil has revealed his frustration with the current situation as he wants to represent Ghana in the upcoming tourney.

He shared, “It is up to my club if they will allow me to leave and join the national team for the tournament. If they are not letting me play then they should allow me to join the team”.

With the tournament starting on November 8, Coach Ibrahim Tanko is hoping his foreign based players arrive before the end of this week.
