CAF U-23: Substitute Kwabena Owusu’s brace against Mali sends Ghana into semi-finals

Published on: 14 November 2019

A brace from substitute Kwabena Owusu has inspired Ghana to a 2-0 win over Mali as the team progress to the semi-finals of the 2019 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament currently ongoing in Egypt.

In need of two goals, Ghana could not get off to the needed start as they allowed their opponent to take control of the match.

The Malians who went into the match on the back of two defeats looked the more determined side as they dominated and caused all the troubles for the Black Meteors.

A series of attacking plays by both teams could not produce any goal as the first half ended in a stalemate at the Al Salam Stadium.

At recess, Ghana coach Ibrahim Tanko psyched up his charges who approached the game with more urgency and purpose to get on the scoresheet.

Ten minutes after resuming from the break, the Black Meteors came alive and went in to take a deserved lead on the 74th minute courtesy a thumping header from substitute Kwabena Owusu.

The FC Leganes striker was at it again on 85th minute when he converted a one v one chance to make it 2-0 for Ghana against the Mali side.

From there on it was all about time management as the Meteors held on to cruise to an emphatic win that has now seen them progress to the semi-finals of the 2019 CAF U-23 AFCON.
