Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr. George Afriyie has stressed that the criteria based on which players are handed call ups to the various national teams is a complete joke.
The national teams, despite the abundance of talent available, continues to underperform whenever they go for tournaments, either continentally or globally.
In times past, one of the main issues that have been raised has to do with how undeserving players are named to represent some of the national teams. Whiles some may be warming benches at their clubs, some even arrive at camp with injuries and nothing to offer the team in question.
Speaking in an interview with Happy FM earlier today, George Afriyie has noted that the basis on which some player are invited to the national team must be abolished.
According to him, some people pay monies to journalists to hype players on their media platforms just to convince managers to hand them call ups. The aspiring GFA president believes that players should be invited based on merit and their ability to perform regardless of the team they play for.
“The things that we see in our football today, we shouldn't pretend people would just want to give money to certain journalists to hype players so they get called up to the national team; meanwhile they cannot perform. These things must stop"
“Everybody must understand that Tamale City FC and Ebusua Dwarfs players can also play for the national team. Can't you see the recent call-up?".
“People are just working for their selfish interest, not for the interest of the country or the football in this country. If we did same, by this time we would be billionaires”
“Call ups to the national teams is a complete joke because previously if coaches invite players, management subject the list to scrutiny and you have to justify why you called a certain player and not any other player”, George Afriyie shared.
