Carlo Ancelotti Bemoans Bayern Munich's Lack of 'Determination' in Atletico Madrid Defeat

Published on: 28 September 2016

Carlo Ancelotti has lamented his Bayern Munich side's lack of "bite and determination" in their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Ancelotti said he believed that his players were too methodical and slow in their approach play - tactics that played into Atletico's counter-attacking hands.

Yannick Carrasco's goal 10 minutes before half-time proved to be the difference on the night at the Vicente Calderon stadium as Bayern failed to create much in the way of clear cut opportunities.

Strikers Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski went closest for the visitors, but the Bundesliga champions could not find a way back into proceedings as they fell to their first defeat under Ancelotti.

After the game, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss stated that Atletico's gameplan had proved to be his side's undoing - despite suggestions that the La Liga club appeared to be more of a footballing outfit than in previous seasons.

He said: "We didn't play with enough bite and determination. We lost control of the ball too easily and left ourselves open to the counter attack. That was key. We were also too slow in our buildup play.

"We controlled the game but were too slow. Against Atletico you have to be much quicker, more efficient and take your chances.

"Atletico played as we expected. We could have played better. We started well, but then we lost our way a bit.

"We started to lose some personal battles, gave the ball away and they could break. They scored the goal and afterwards we tried to get back into the game.

"I saw the same team as previous years. Some players have changed, they have more depth in their game, with very fast players up front. But their style is the same.

"This is a difficult stadium to come to, and Atletico are a tough team to play against. To lose is always sad. We can still win the group -- we will have to beat Atletico -- but we must look forward."
