The player has been sounded out by Newcastle United over a loan switch after being declared surplus to requirements by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

Atsu has already held initial talks with Newcastle management but is expected to meet with Rafa Benitez over playing time assurances before putting pen to paper.

Chelsea are keen to get the flop off their books and hope a successful spell with Newcastle in the Championship will earn Atsu a permanent move away from London.

Atsu has not made a single appearance for Chelsea since signing in 2013, and has spent the last three seasons on loan at the likes of Everton, Vitesse and Malaga.

Meanwhile, Atsu has also emerged as a shock target for Middlesbrough who have targeted him as a replacement for out-of-favour, Albert Adomah.
