Coaches need five years to develop a national team – Kwesi Appiah

Former Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah says a national team coach needs four to five years to be able to develop a proper team.

Appiah remains of the few local coaches that have had stints with the national team.

Having gone through the ranks, the Kotoko legend became the first local coach to steer the side to qualify for the country for World Cup.

Appiah led the side to book a place in the 2014 Mundial in Brazil.

He also led the side to the Round of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt but was replaced by CK Akonnor.

However, speaking in an interview, Appiah is of the view that the Ghana Football Association [GFA] must consider appointing a coach for the long term to be able to develop a good team.

“When it comes to the national team, the least a national team coach should get to be able to build should be four or five years,” he told Joy Prime.

The Black Stars is currently without a head coach following the resignation of Otto Addo after the Black Stars’ early elimination from the tournament.

However, a new gaffer is expected to be named by the end of January before the team reassembles in March for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] doubleheader against Angola.
