President and General Manager of Columbus Crew FC, Tim Bezbatchenko has lauded Jonathan Mensah after being named in the Major League Soccer [MLS] team of the season.
The Ghana International has been a pivot for the Yellow and Blacks team this campaign in the MLS throughout 2020 and has led them into the MLS playoffs stage.
The former AshantiGold SC defender joined Columbus Crew SC in 2017 from Russian side Anzhi and has been a revelation since his move.
Mensah was named captain of the side before the season and has been a leader both off and on the pitch for Crew’s this season.
“We want to congratulate Jonathan on earning this worthy recognition as one of the top players in MLS in 2020,” said Bezbatchenko.
“Jonathan has been one of our key performers since earning the captain’s role, playing every minute of every match for the Club during a long and at times incredibly compact season.
"He has been pivotal to the success of our backline this year and a large reason why we had one of the best defensive records in the League during the regular season.
"We are proud of Jonathan’s accomplishments and we know he will continue to perform at a high level during the playoffs,” he added.
He has played 20 times in the Major League Soccer in America regular season and has been named in the Team-Of-The-Year due to his stellar display.
Mensah – who recently signed a multi-year contract extension with Crew SC has since made 100 regular-season appearances (97 starts) for the Club while scoring three goals and providing one assist.
The Black & Gold captain made his milestone 100th regular-season appearance on Decision Day in a 2-1 home victory against Atlanta United (November 8).
