Germany and Schalke 04 attacker Max Meyer has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur tried signing him during the summer transfer window.

Meyer has two years left to run on his current deal at the Bundesliga club, but back in Juneclaimed that the Premier League would be the ideal destination if he ever wanted to leave the German top flight.

"If I left Schalke and was going to play football in any other league in Europe I would like to move to England," he said five months ago.

The 21-year-old was a reported target for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool in the summer. However, according to the player, it was Tottenham that made the move. Schalke, though, were unwilling to listen to any sort of offer.

"I know that there was interest and the club was asked, but Schalke immediately put a stop to it. So the matter was settled," he said to German publication Sport Bild, cited by theEvening Standard.

"Of course I've dealt with it. I know what I have at Schalke and I like to play for this club. When the time comes, we'll come to a decision. But I feel good about Schalke."

Meyer has been with Schalke since 2009, having joined on a free transfer fromRot-Weiß Oberhausen Jugend. Known for his pace, dribbling ability and creativity and finishing, he would slot in well alongside Dele Alli at Tottenham.

Unfortunately, Mauricio Pochettino is being forced to wait it out with Vincent Janssen, who is having a bit of difficulty adapting. But he could make another attempt at getting Meyer in January.
