Liverpool have been dealt an injury blow ahead of their hosting of Sunderland in the Premier League, as Daniel Sturridge is sidelined with a minor calf problem.

The England striker is not seriously injured, but cannot feature today. On the other hand, star midfielder Phillippe Coutinho is available for the contest.

Daniel Sturridge will miss @LFC game today with a minor calf issue. Not serious but enough to keep him out. Coutinho, however, is fit.

Liverpool hope to return to the top of the Premier League with victory, as leaders Chelsea face a more difficult clash against Tottenham. The Reds have enough strength in depth to deal with Sturridge's knock, as the likes of Roberto Firmino andSadio Mané can handle his absence.

Coutinho had been a slight question mark before the game, but is back to fitness. The playmaker has been one of the best in the Premier League in his position, scoring five goals and making five assists.

Rumours continue to swirl about Sturridge's future at the club, with a possible move to Southampton the latest in a series of links between the international and other Premier League clubs. West Ham and Tottenham have also been suggested as escape routes for the Englishman, who does not seem to fit in with Liverpool's pacy attack.

The Anfield faithful will now hope that Coutinho, and not Sturridge, can bag the Reds three points against Sunderland.
