Diego Godin Says Atletico Madrid Must Rediscover Their Defensive Solidity to Turn Season Around

Published on: 22 November 2016

Atletico Madrid centre back, Diego Godin, has suggested that his team must rediscover their defensive solidity in order to return to winning ways, according toEspana.

Atletico lost to local rivals Real Madrid last weekend, meaning they have now slipped down to sixth in La Liga, nine points behind Los Blancos who are currently top.

Having boasted an impressive defensive record at the start of the season (only three goals conceded in 11 games), Los Rojiblancos have shipped in nine goals in their last five matches, which helps to explain why they have slipped so fardown the table.

But Godin believes that the team are capable ofturning things around, despite their poor form, and must tighten up at the back if they want to return to winning ways.

The defender said:"We will try and build a victory from that solidity, which has been a key factor for the team in recent years.

"We have lost goals and points down to details. We must correct them. They are not just small details, as they have cost us games.

"It has been a continuous upward curve, improving our play, each season.

Last weekend's3-0 home defeat to Real Madrid has led some to question whether this current Atletico side are capable of competing with the best teams, both domestically and in Europe.

But Godin insists things have been blown out of proportion and that the players are fully focused on Wednesday evening's Champions League group match with PSV Eindhoven.

The Uruguayan added: "When you lose it seems all is bad -- but it is not like that. We are very good, and we know our path very clearly.

"We know what the coach wants, and we are with him to the death on that. That is the most important thing."

"These are moments that can happen, you can lose a game. But we are just thinking about PSV, our next objective.

"You must be balanced, relaxed, and inside our message is to be confident. This is the same team as a month ago, a good team. We know our strengths and that we can improve."
