Diego Simeone has hailed his Atletico Madrid side's 1-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich as "one of the best performances" since he became head coach.

The Argentine said his players had executed his gameplan to the letter, and that they deserved to secure all three points over Carlo Ancelotti's Bundesliga outfit.

Yannick Carrasco's 36th minute goal proved to be the winner in a match that saw Atletico carve out the better opportunities.

Despite Antoine Griezmann's missed penalty and Fernando Torres' glut of gilt-edge chances, the La Liga club held on to inflict a first defeat on Ancelotti since he took charge of Bayern.

And Simeone was gushing in his praise after an important victory at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

He said: "Today I liked everything about our performance. They played with a passion, and with a commitment, that is very difficult to achieve. We pressed well when we had to press. We sat back well when it was needed, and we were able to counter.

"We suffered when we had to over the 90 minutes. We were up against an opponent which is one of the three best teams in the world. It was one of the best performances since I've been at Atletico Madrid."

The 45-year-old remains cautious over his side's chances of making it three wins out of three in Group D, with a challenging away trip to FC Rostov in two weeks' time.

Simeone continued: "It would not be good to think too far ahead. There is still a long way to go.

"The results are going well. But we will have to go to Russia to play Rostov. They drew 2-2 with PSV [Eindhoven] today. So that will be difficult. We must be attentive.

"Then if we are in the position we want to be in, we will think again."

Simeone also added that he had no hesitation over handing spot kick duties to Griezmann, who missed his penalty in Atletico's Champions League final penalty shootout defeat to city rivals Real in May.

He said: "Antoine has missed a penalty -- as have [Diego] Maradona, [Leo] Messi, [Michel] Platini, Zico ... the best players in the world. He will keep taking them. He has tremendous quality and nothing else.

"We are very happy with Antoine's work, today he also worked hard in covering [Arturo] Vidal when they had the ball. He also set up Carrasco's goal. He brings us so many things -- is one of the best in the world."
