Diego Simeone has called on his Atletico Madrid players to show some humility, after beating PSV Eindhovenin the Champions League on Wednesdayto progress throughto the last 16 as group winners.
Simeone's men beat their Dutch opposition, thanks in part tothe French connection of Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann.
Following a goalless first-half, Ballon d'Or nominee Griezmann struck to seal the result, after setting up Gameiro for the opener.
Atletico were out to redeem themselves after a 3-0 humiliation at the hands of neighbours Real Madrid at the weekend. And redeem themselves they did, as the victory ensured a first place finish in the groupfor the La Liga side - with nearest challengers Bayern Munich suffering a shock defeat to FC Rostov.
Speaking to BeIn Sports, Simeone insisted his players had the fans to thank for spurring them on inside the Vicente Calderon.
He said: "After losing on Saturday, it wasn't easy to play at home again. The fans responded extraordinarily well and the players felt that.
"The team got better as the game went on and the first goal freed up our play. Over the season there are many momentsthat you must live with, but the only thing that counts are the objectives and how you end up. Criticism will be there, and praise. You must not get distracted by either.
"We have finished a tough groupa game early and in first place, so we are happy. It is a very big step for the club to have been in the last 16 for four seasons in a row."
The result was the normally mean-spirited Madrid side'sfirst clean sheet in six outings, and came after Simeone restored the experienced holding midfielder Tiago to the side, shifting Koke out wide.
"We have various options in the centre of the field," Simeone added. "With Koke close to the forwards it is easier for him to make chances.
The one blemish of the night came in the form of an injury to Filipe Luis, who was forced off midway through the second-half with a muscle injury. It remains to be seen whether the full back can help his teammates topreserve their 100% group stage record against Bayern in two weeks.
