England have scored just three times in their last three games and have looked poor in front of goal throughout with a lack of cutting edge and attacking movement.

Wayne Rooney andJordan Henderson aside, the other places in Gareth Southgate's line-up against Scotland on Fridayremain up for grabs and with Rooney likely to operate as a 'number 10', that means a place for a striker to lead the line.

Responding to a 90min poll, 43,969 England fans voted for their choice for the player who should fill that role for the two upcoming games. Given the lack of general recent form, it was an understandably close contest but the winner was perhaps a little surprising all the same.

For 33% of those who made their voice heard, Daniel Sturridge is the man for the job. That's despite the 27-year-old struggling to get into the Liverpool team this season and only so far managing goals in the EFL Cup, while failing to score in the Premier League.

Sturridge did, however, at least find the net for England against Malta last month.

With 27% of the vote, Manchester United teenager Marcus Rashford proved to be the next most popular choice for supporters. The 19-year-old scored a hat-trick on his Under-21 debut earlier this season and made an impact at club level when he finally got on the pitch in late August.

Rashford's form has dropped a little of late, though, which perhaps had an influence on this vote.

Tottenham's Harry Kane commanded 21% of the vote after only just returning from an injury layoff. He scored in his first appearance since September at the weekend with a penalty in the north London derby and might perhaps have been the overwhelming choice but for his fitness.

Only 11% want to see Rooney, who will start anyway after Gareth Southgate's Thursday morning confirmation, lead the line. Even fewer, just 8%, gave their support to Jamie Vardy, with the Leicester hero currently struggling to reproduce his incredible form of last season.
