EPL PREVIEW - Matchday 9: Watford can topple Chelsea; Tight Tottenham and Liverpool contest; Arsenal to continue Everton despair;

Published on: 20 October 2017

Can the Hornets inflict a third successive defeat away to the champions? Will an Everton side in crisis produce a response at home to the Gunners? Can the Spurs continue their recent string of impressive results against an erratic Liverpool?

Here is Tribalfootball's preview for the best matches in Matchday 9:

Chelsea v Watford

To say the Hornets are flying would be an understatement.

Riding high in the top four on the back of a stirring home win against Arsenal, they find themselves in the incredible position of being two points ahead of Chelsea who sit in fifth place.

In stark contrast, the champions are licking their wounds following a disastrous loss away to Crystal Palace which broke a number of unwanted records, compounded by the loss to Manchester City the week previous.

Another loss and Chelsea could sit 12 points adrift of City.

Last Time They Played:

Chelsea 4 Watford 3 (Stamford Bridge - May 15)

Team News:

David Luiz and Tiemoue Bakayoko are Antonio Conte's fresh injury concerns after Wednesday's Champions League exploits at home to Roma, with the former withdrawn early as a precaution before Bakayoko complained of groin soreness.

Doubts heading into this clash, they may join the already sidelined N'Golo Kante and Victor Moses, while Danny Drinkwater is still not ready for his debut.

Marco Silva already has a long injury-list to contend with at Watford but only Issac Success's knee is a fresh concern.

Player to Watch: Eden Hazard

Fresh off a double midweek against Roma, the Belgium star looms as the deadlock-breaker in what promises to be a cagey clash against the Hornets.

The visitors are travelling to the Bridge with nothing to lose, while the home team may err on the side of caution with the looming possibility of three consecutive defeats. Yet to score in the Premier League, Hazard will be eager to get off the mark in what is an major early-season of their back-to-back title credentials.

Prediction: Chelsea 1 Watford 2

The Chelsea defence are leaky at the moment and this shapes as a potential banana-skin contest. Six goals conceded in their past three matches in all competitions is un-Conte like and he'll need to sure up that defence, which is facing personnel concerns.

A bold prediction, but expecting a third straight Premier League defeat for last season's champions at the hands of a Watford side on cloud nine at the moment.

Everton v Arsenal

The Toffees are languishing in 16th and host the Gunners on the back of a torrid time against Lyon in the Europa League midweek, losing 2-1 and having themselves embroiled in embarrassing behaviour by a touring fan who entered the pitch and appeared to assault one of the visiting team's players.

After an impressive September period, it appeared the international break came at the worst possible time for Arsenal who's momentum was shot in a slip-up loss away to the marauding Watford.

Last Time They Played:

Arsenal 3 Everton 1 (Emirates Stadium - May 21)

Team News:

Ross Barkley, Seamus Coleman, Yannick Bolasie and James McCarthy all remain sidelined for the Toffees, while Ronald Koeman will have Thursday's trip to Lyon to navigate and possibly alter his squad for the weekend.

Arsenal too have a Europa League tie to contend with, returning from Red Star Belgrade with a 1-0 victory thanks to a spectacular goal from Olivier Giroud. With no fresh injury concerns, expect the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey to return, who were among a host of players rested by Arsene Wenger against Red Star.

Player to Watch: Michael Keane

Whether the English defender holds his place against Arsenal remains a doubt, but the youngster has had to endure some awful displays this season for the Toffees.

His most recent, a reckless display against Lyon midweek. Nutmegged in the build-up to the penalty and caught ball-watching for the second goal. No doubt a highly regarded talent, Keane must bounce back for this club at a time where even his manager refused to deny the club is in crisis.

Prediction: Everton 0 Arsenal 2

Everton are all over the shop at present and despite a slip-up in the league last outing, Arsenal's midweek triumph in Serbia will lift spirits in the dressing room ahead of this fixture.

With the pressure intensifying on Koeman after just one win in their past five, you have to wonder when the penny will drop and the cries of Toffee supporters for the Dutchman's head will come to fruition.

With the deeper squad to recuperate from the Europa League and in the much better form of the two sides, expect the Gunners to get the job done with ease.

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

Five years.

The longest barren run against any of the top six belongs to the Spurs, who have not defeated Liverpool since 2012.

On the back of a deserved draw away to Real Madrid midweek and a first win at Wembley under their belt, this may be Tottenham's best chance in a long time to break an erratic Liverpool.

Fresh off scoring seven in the Champions League, perhaps the Reds' mojo is slowly returning for this blockbuster fixture.

Last Time They Played:

Liverpool 2 Tottenham 0 (Anfield - February 11)

Team News:

Danny Rose made his first appearance for the Spurs since January with a 10-min cameo off the bench at the Santiago Bernabéu and could make the bench again, while Victor Wanyama and Erik Lamela remain sidelined.

Mousa Dembele (ankle) and Ben Davies (illness) will need to be assessed before the weekend's clash to be deemed fit to play.

No fresh injury concerns for the Reds, who are already missing Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

Player to Watch: Harry Kane

The England frontman earned rave reviews for his performance against Real Madrid, despite not featuring on the scoresheet. The last time Spurs played at the Bernabeu, Kane managed five minutes off the bench in Leyton Orient's League One win over Plymouth Argyle.

Six years on and Kane has well and truly established himself as one of Europe's most prolific strikers, with many viewing his game against Madrid as a potential audition for a transfer there next summer. 15 goals in his past 11 starts, Kane shapes as the difference when the Spurs host Liverpool.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1 Liverpool 1

Not surprisingly, Liverpool's record against the Premier League heavyweights stacks up quite well and will head to north London riding high after a confidence-boosting Champions League demolition job.

A win for the Spurs and it keeps them in touching distance with City atop of the Premier League. A loss and it could mean they slip by as many as eight points behind the league leaders. Can the Spurs overcome their mental hurdle against the Reds?

The Others:

West Ham United 2 Brighton 0

Manchester City 5 Burnley 0

Huddersfield Town 0 Manchester United 4

Stoke City 2 Bournemouth 1

Swansea City 1 Leicester City 2

Newcastle United 2 Crystal Palace 3

Southampton 2 West Bromwich Albion 1
