Ghanaian forward Evans Mensah scored for HJK Helsinki on Wednesday evening when they defeated Lahti FC on penalties in the quarter-finals of the Finnish top-flight league.

The two clubs went into the match at the Sonera Stadium with high hopes of clinching qualification to the semi-finals of the playoffs.

The home side started very well and went on to take a deserved lead after 33 minutes of play courtesy a strike from Petteri Fossell.

Three minutes later, Evans Owusu fired home a second goal for HJK Helsinki after he had climbed off the bench to replace Petteri Fossell who picked up an injury right after opening the scoring.

Lahti FC returned from the break with a lot of determination and scored twice to bring the game to level terms. Josue and Jasin-Amin Asseh were the scorers for the away side to push the match into extra time.

After both sides had failed to snatch the winner at the end end of the extra time, they were forced to resort to the penalty shootout.

HJK Helsinki emerged as winners and will now go on to face Mariehamn in the semifinal of the playoffs.

Evans Mensah will be expected to play a key role at that stage as HJK targets clinching the trophy at the end of the campaign.
