The Dutch midfielder, who joined the club for £25m from Ajax in the summer, was handed a rare start by Koeman but failed to impress in the 2-1 defeat to Lyon.

Koeman said: "The situation of Klaassen is really difficult.

"I know, I was a good player but I had several moments struggling.

"You are struggling with your confidence. You take wrong decisions.

"He had one shot tonight but it was an open pass to Dominic and it's one v one on the goalkeeper.

"The quality of Lyon, if they get that space it's a goal. That's really a big difference between them, their individual qualities of the attacking players and what we had and showed.

"The performance was under the level in the first half. A lot of mistakes. A lot of doubts. Players without any confidence. Second half much better."
