Former Ghana International Augustine Arhinful insists the expansion of the number nations at AFCON will help develop sporting infrastructure across the continent.

The Confederation of African Football confirmed the expansion of the Africa Cup of nations from 16 countries to 24 last week and moving it from January/February to June/July.

The 42 year old believes with the expansion of the tournament, there will be new facilities built and especially pitches that will help develop the sport.

“I think infrastructure wise it is good for countries to have places for the local players to develop.  CAF should also come on board and they don’t have to just give the tournament to them. Even if it is financially they can help raise money for some of these infrastructure, they should do it,” he told GhOne TV.

“Previously we did not see that but I hope this new president and his vie should just do that. Even if takes them to bring sponsors on board for some of these infrastructures they have to, because most of these countries don’t what we are looking for especially the pitches,” he added.

“If we have a very good quality pitch that we are to play in, you will see quality game. I believe we have to look at the improvement of the pitch and the stands to accommodate supporters and the fans.”

Augustine Arhinful Ahinful made several appearances for the Ghana national football team. He participated in the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship, 1996 Summer Olympics and in the 2000 African Cup of Nations.
