Ex-Leicester Star Names Achievement That Would Be as Good as Foxes Winning the Premier League

Ex-Leicester defender Gerry Taggart, who spent six years with the club and was a League Cup winner in 2000, has stated that the Foxes reaching the Champions League quarter finals this season would be as big an achievement as wining the Premier League was last season.

Leicester are still yet to concede in four Champions League group games after Wednesday night's 0-0 draw with Copenhagen in Denmark and are on the brink of guaranteeing themselves a place in the last 16 of the world's single biggest club competition.

Winning the group also looks likely at this stage, which would mean being a top seed in the draw for the next round, and Taggart has high hopes that a quarter final appearance could follow.

"First and foremost, Leicester must finish top from the group and they've not got a better chance to do so," the former Northern Ireland international told bwin this week.

"I believe that the quarter-finals are within sight if they get a favourable round-of-16 draw, which would be absolutely stratospheric in terms of achievement.

"If Leicester get to the quarter-finals, it would be as good an achievement as winning the league was, considering the lack of experience they have in Europe's elite competition. It is crazy to even think about."

Among the magical Foxes squad are two Ballon d'Or nominees, unthinkable even just a few months ago, in Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. For Taggart, the latter deserves to considered alongside superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for what he has achieved in 2016.

"Mahrez should be up there with Ronaldo and Messi competing for Ballon d'Or this year," the 46-year-old commented.

"He was the best player in the Premier League last season and the main protagonist in one of the best football stories ever, so I would not be surprised if he wins the award based on the year he's had."
